A veterinary technician is a professional trained to provide assistance to veterinarians in providing medical assistance to animals. Examples of the duties of a veterinary technician are administering medications, performing laboratory tests and providing surgical and dental assistance. An aspiring veterinary assistant can start his education and training from an AVMA or CVMA accredited school. A veterinary technician will need all the training and experience he acquired in order to be proficient in his work. Successful completion of a certification exam is also necessary in order for a veterinary technician to practice his profession. Depending on the regulations commissioned by his resident state, a veterinary technician can be called licensed, registered or certified. A veterinary technician can also choose to specialize in certain fields such as neurology, dentistry and cardiology. Besides clinics, a veterinary technician can also be employed in military service, biomedical research, veterinary schools and animal control facilities.
